Maranguka Role of Women Working Group
working group purpose
To improve the lives of Women in Bourke.
Working Group focus
Women feel connected to culture and community
Women feel supported to overcome trauma, grief and loss
The group provides a safe, welcoming space for women to come together, connect, and engage in meaningful group work or individual activities that promote wellbeing and community connection.
Central to the group’s strength are its shared values and strong engagement agreements, which foster trust, respect, and openness.
An internal evaluation of the group highlighted the most valued aspects of participation: the opportunity to engage in group activities, the emotional and peer support from fellow members, the chance to yarn freely, and the learning of new, practical skills.
Women are on a healing and empowerment journey
These insights speak to the group’s positive impact, with women reporting they feel more confident working in group settings, more connected to their community, and increasingly empowered to take on new roles and responsibilities in their lives.
Women build confidence, skills and community leadership
Activities are designed to build confidence and capability in everyday life.
A favourite among participants is weaving and sharing lunch together, where women are encouraged to help prepare the meal and exchange ideas for simple, affordable dishes they can recreate at home.
Other activities have included weaving, banner design and creation, arts and crafts, sewing, and knitting – all of which offer a creative outlet and a sense of achievement.
These hands-on projects allow women to express themselves, build confidence, and celebrate their strengths as individuals and as a collective. Through initiatives like the Journey to Healing Women’s Group, Maranguka is actively supporting women to grow strong in culture, connection, and community leadership.
