Coming to the Centre
Who can use the Aboriginal Child and Family Centre?
ACFCs deliver a cultural model of care that directly contributes to Closing the Gap. The Centre is designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 0 to 8 years, their parents, carers and families. We also welcome the wider family and community members who help raise and care for children.
What age children does the Centre support?
We support children from birth through to 8 years of age.
Do I need to be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander to use the Centre?
Our focus is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families. Some programs and services may also be available to non-Aboriginal families.
Do I need a referral to access services?
Not usually. You can contact us directly or drop in and have a yarn with our team.
Do I need to make an appointment, or can I just drop in?
You’re welcome to drop in and see us. Some services may need an appointment, and we’ll help organise that if needed.
Is there a cost to use the Centre or attend programs?
Many of our programs and services are free. If there are any costs involved, we’ll let you know upfront.
What happens when I first come to the Centre?
We’ll welcome you, have a chat about what you’re looking for, and help connect you with the right support, service or activity.
What should I bring when I visit for the first time?
Just yourself and your children if they’re coming along. If you have paperwork relating to a service or appointment, feel free to bring it with you.
Can grandparents, Aunties, Uncles or other family members attend with children?
Yes. We know children are raised by family and community, and we welcome grandparents, Aunties, Uncles and other carers.
What if I need help but I'm not sure which service I need?
That’s okay. Come in and talk with us. We’ll help you work out what support might be helpful and connect you with the right people.
Services for Children
What services are available at the ACFC?
The Centre brings together early learning, family support, health services, parenting support, playgroups, community activities and referrals to other services.
What early childhood education and care is available?
The Centre offers quality early learning and care programs to help children grow, learn and get ready for school.
What health services are available for babies and children?
We help families access services such as child health checks, immunisations, developmental screenings and visiting health professionals.
Are there playgroups or activities for children and families?
Yes. We run playgroups, family activities, cultural events, learning activities and programs designed around the needs of local families.
How do I enrol my child in a program or service?
Get in touch with our team and we’ll talk you through the enrolment process and help you get started.
Support for Families
What support is available for pregnant women and new parents?
We can help connect you with antenatal services, maternal and child health supports, parenting information and community programs.
What family support can I get through the Centre?
We can provide information, parenting support, referrals, mentoring opportunities and help you connect with other local services and families.
Can the Centre help connect me with other services in Bourke?
Yes. One of our main roles is helping families find and access the services they need in the community.
Are there programs or learning opportunities for parents and carers?
Yes. We offer programs and workshops that support parenting, family wellbeing, learning and personal development.
Can I talk to someone privately about something happening in my family?
Absolutely. If you’re worried about something or need support, we’re here to listen and help in a safe and respectful way.
Will my information be kept private?
Yes. Your personal information is treated confidentially and handled with care and respect.
Can the Centre help with transport or getting to appointments?
Depending on your situation, we may be able to help or connect you with available transport options. Talk to our team about what you need.
How does the Centre make sure families feel culturally safe and welcome?
The Centre is guided by Aboriginal culture, community and local voices. We aim to create a place where everyone feels respected, welcome and connected.
