The Yanmali Aboriginal Child and Family Centre is being designed by Kaunitz Yeung Architecture.
They’re based in Redfern in Sydney. David Kaunitz and Ka Wai Yeung, a husband and wife, started the practice in 2009.
Since then, they’ve worked with Aboriginal communities right across the country. Health centres, schools, cultural buildings, community places. The work has been recognised here and overseas.
What they’re known for is listening first. They don’t turn up with the design already drawn. They sit down with Elders, with community organisations, with staff and with families, and they build from there.
The NSW Department of Communities and Justice engaged them to design and manage the new Aboriginal Child and Family Centres going up across the state. Yanmali is one of them.
The Centre is due to open in Autumn 2027. Between now and then there’ll be more chances for community to have a say about the Centre.
